Fishing Maui, Hawaii
Maui, Hawaii’s second largest island is a fantastic location for charter fishing. Mahi-mahi (dorado), tuna (ahi), ono (wahoo) and marlin are found in vast numbers off the coast of Maui. In fact, there is not a bad time of year to come to Maui for some big game charter fishing!
With such great fishing available year round, the charter fishing industry tends to stay busy all year. Charters tend to fill up fast, so if you are planning a charter fishing trip in Maui, be sure to book well in advance. Certain times of year- winter holidays, spring break, 4th of July, etc. are particularly busy with charters booking up to 6 weeks in advance, so be sure to book your charter now!
All of the target species are fast, strong and tend to take the same bait, so no specific species is generally targeted. Pacific blue marlin, striped marlin and the Pacific short-nosed spearfish are the most common type of billfish caught, with rare catches of sailfish and black marlin on occasion. Mahi-mahi, ono (wahoo), and tuna (ahi, yellowfin, bigeye, skipjack) are also very common catches when charter fishing in Maui.
Maui is known for its great weather all year long, and its beautiful beaches, world famous surfing, and friendly people attract vacationers from around the world. And the big game fishing is world class. The summer months are generally the best time to target Pacific blue marlin and yellowfin tuna, while the winter months tend to favor big eye tuna and striped marlin. Spring and fall are the most prolific times for mahi-mahi, while ono fishing peaks in late spring and early summer. Of course, this is just a general guideline. All of these big game fish species are caught year round in Maui. The fishing is never bad for any of these deep sea fish.
Lahaina Harbor is the most popular starting off point for a great Maui charter fishing adventure. Its location on the leeward side of Maui generally means calmer water and milder weather, making for a comfortable way to begin your charter fishing trip.
